Custom Framing

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

As a photographer, there is nothing better than seeing what my images look like when they are paired with gorgeous frames. This client selected a beautiful frame from my wide-array of frame options for this trio of wall portraits.

I’ve done more and more custom framing this year for clients who want to receive that final product ready to hang on the wall. With the positive feedback on the implementation of custom framing in 2007, I’ve decided to offer it as a standard service for all wall portraits in 2008. In January and February I will be updating the studio walls to showcase the framing and display options available.

Power of Three

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

One of my favorite wall display configurations is matching three portraits together. There are so many possibilities that will suit any decor style from contemporary to traditional.

If you have a contemporary style of decor, I love the look of three identical-sized squares - so cool! To add to the modern flair, I suggest the gallery wrapped canvases, which seem to float on the wall.

Of course, not all images work well with a square configuration, but the same concept of three identical sized portraits works well with horizontal or vertical images as well!

Another option which stays within the contemporary style but offers a bit of an eclectic mix is to keep the height of the portraits the same, so that the top and bottom edges line up, but vary the width of the portraits for added interest.

If you prefer a traditional look, an option would be to choose a larger size for the center images and then to display two smaller portraits, one on either side of the main center image. A classic and timeless display!Classic trio of images

I am always ready to help with any type of portrait gallery you would like to create. One of the joys of commissioning custom photography is to be able to showcase those beautiful portraits as an artistic focal point within your home.

November 30th

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Umm… where did November go? I swear yesterday I was taking the kids around the block to trick or treat! It has definitely been a whirlwind month - Lots of great sessions and fun kids! :) I will share a few of them…

Smiley little gal:

A VERY big boy - but lots of fun! He’s quite the international traveler - having lived in Ireland and now is headed to Australia with Mom & Dad!

Remember all those hands on the belly? Well, Baby J arrive and big brothers & sister are VERY happy with the new addition to their family!

Adorable trio from a session at DC Ranch Marketplace - I’ve photographed them since the youngest was a newborn - such fun to watch the kids grow! :)

I love his smile!

Little brother has that quiet charm that makes you want to hug him so tight! Stay tuned for a post in January that will showcase their new little brother due in early 08!

Wall Portrait Sizes

Friday, September 14th, 2007

I am working on a comprehensive ordering guide to assist clients while they are placing their portrait orders. Tonight the page I was working on is tips on choosing the appropriate size of wall portrait. I spent WAY too much time on the diagram to illustrate the various size relationships, so I figured I’d share it. :)

Choosing An Appropriate Wall Portrait Size

We often think of 8×10s as the standard enlargement size. I encourage you to think larger for your personal portrait collection. Print sizes starting at 11×14 are traditional wall portrait sizes, meaning that the portrait is best viewed from a distance of three feet, which is a comfortable distance for a viewer to stand from the wall. Also, think of the impact you want your portrait to have on guests in your home. A 20×24 portrait makes a statement and draws the viewer in from across the room to “take in” the image. An 8×10 portrait on the wall draws the viewer closer simply because they cannot see the image from a distance.

Below is a size reference to show wall portrait sizes set to scale against an 8 foot couch. Our Standard Wall Portrait size (20×24) is highlighted in green.
