|Phoenix Maternity Photographer| Big Sis’ To Be!

June 26th, 2009

Digging CLEAR back to December 2007 brings up a blog post about this little gal as a newborn - ADORABLE - and you can see, this little beauty just keeps getting cuter! Now she’s going to be a big sister in a few weeks!

Did I mention she’s got a TON of personality bundled up in a small package! :)

I had the joy of photographing Miss Payten last week. :) As you can see she is in possession of some of the biggest blue eyes I’ve ever seen! You can’t help but smile when you see such a cutie!

|Phoenix Photographer| Family Fun!

June 15th, 2009

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing the K family since their oldest girl was a tiny newborn - nearly 4 years ago! Since then they’ve added a sweet red-headed beauty and a handsome son to their collection of kiddos. :) They came in last week to capture Mr. D’s seven-month adoreable-ness. Lots of silly faces, giggles and grins! Here are some of my favorites:

|Newborn Photographer| Benjamin - Ten Days

June 9th, 2009

I am not sure babies get much sweeter than Mr. Benjamin.  Such the model baby - sleeping so soundly for his newborn photo session! He did let us get a glimpse of his beautiful gray-blue eyes at the end of his session as he snuggled in with a hand made quilt given to him as a gift.  I just love the portrait of him in his daddy’s arms and had to include it as part of the sneak peek since Father’s Day is just around the corner!

|Phoenix Photographer| What to Wear!

June 3rd, 2009

This week’s shopping took me to Gap.com to browse for outfits - a little more personal for me as I am looking for something fun and colorful for my family for a portrait session we have scheduled while on vacation in northern Montana next month (I can already feel the cool breeze and the fresh mountain air!)

I found the dress first and fell in love - just love the vibrant color (I may have to work on a tan). And while it breaks my general rule to avoid sleeveless, it would be perfect paired with a darker denim jean jacket (which I conveniently already own!)

I have to admit, I am going to have to convince my hubby to wear the dark plum shirt.  To up the casual factor a bit, I will likely pair it with a white shirt underneath and he can wear it open.  For the kids - well, comfort is the key and while I found an ADORABLE dress for Sarah, she simply won’t have anything to do with dresses at this point, so I stuck with a magenta top and dark denim capris.

Hopefully this inspires you! (oh, and the dress is on sale this weekend! Whoohoo!)

|Sneak Peek| Aspen - 3 weeks

May 21st, 2009

Miss Aspen was such a doll - so sweet and cooperative! This little cutie is Colorado bound (and what better place for an Aspen to reside?) Huge thanks to her mom & dad for letting me be a part of such a special time!

|Phoenix Professional Photographer| What to Wear Wednesday: Family Edition!

May 20th, 2009

Considering that last week totally slipped away from me, I am a little late posting a family suggestion on what to wear for sessions. I am probably asked the most about how families should dress for sessions. My default suggestion, especially for studio sessions, is to wear solid black shirts and dark wash jeans - this is a “no-brainer” solution that will really allow your images to have a beautiful, classic look to them.

For those who want to venture out into the world of color for their family suggestions but don’t want to be “matchy matchy” I suggest working towards coordination of the clothing - a good rule of thumb is to put mom & dad into solids and then let there be some subtle color in the kids clothes. As shown below - the daughter’s sundress is establishing the color pallet for the other family members - by keeping the shirts of the other members in the same family as those contained within the sundress, the results should be pleasing.

what to wear to a family portrait

This is how I shop for my own family when I want some color in our portraits - I generally start with the girls - either for myself or my daughter.  I prefer to be in solids, so I will scout out the girls section for a outfit for Sarah that has colors that will compliment the whole family. Once I’ve found a few pieces that might work, I will take those to the women’s section to look for myself. The boys are last and usually end up with a solid polo or sweater, depending on the season.

So, some basic rules:

  1. Dark wash jeans are always an excellent choice. Avoid short dresses or skirts for the girls.
  2. Find one or two pieces that have some color/interest to them (nothing too crazy though) and build from there.
  3. Monochromatic is also a good choice - you can stay within the same color family, but mix/match the textures/fabrics of the clothing
  4. Dark solids are perfect for anyone who wishes to hide a little bit of extra weight.
  5. Dark shoes/socks are a must if you don’t want to be barefoot
  6. Stay away from sleeveless shirts tops you have Michelle Obama-style upper arms. :)

If you have any questions on how to dress for a family session, definitley let me know! Clothing choices are an essential part of ensuring that your portraits will be cherished and I am always available to help!

|Sneak Peek| Newborn Ethan

May 9th, 2009

Ethan’s Mom & Dad warned me early in the session that their little guy had some very particular “demands” at a very young age - basically he preferred to be held - all. the. time.  He must have decided that my bean bag was a suitable substitute for the warm arms of his parents and aside from a couple of quick feeding breaks, he was the perfect angel.  Here are a few from our session and I have to admit I am in love with the image of the three of them - Mom & Dad were sooo very tired during the session - sleep deprivation can do that to you! - but the fatigued faded away as soon as they snuggled in with Ethan.

|Phoenix Photographer| What to Wear Wednesday!

May 6th, 2009

This week’s “What to Wear Wednesdays” features some casually fun outfits for both boys and girls. As you can tell, I am partial to the Gymboree lines for for boys and just had too much fun looking through the girls clothes at Gap Kids. I really want the cami and capri set in my size! LOL

Note: The outfits shown today would work really well for sessions for individual children. :) Next week I will focus on putting together clothing for siblings and families!

|Chandler Newborn Photographer| Double the Fun!

May 3rd, 2009

I giggle a little every time I see these two boys - their mom informed me that her natural twins were an “efficient” way to establish a nice family of four. I have to admit that while I’ve never heard multiples pregnancy put quite in those terms, she’s correct. Very efficient! She and Dad have double the diapers, double the feedings, double the laundry but definitely double the fun!
